Oxygen and Oxygen Toxicity

Abstract
The therapeutic value of supplemental oxygen breathing for clinical conditions characterized by hypoxemia is widely recognized. Consequently, oxygen is one of the most commonly prescribed "drugs" in a hospital setting. As with all drugs, the use of oxygen is not without potential harm.
The complications of 02 administration are readily correctable provided they are recogized. In addition, oxygen in high concentrations is cytotoxic and can lead to progressive respiratory failure and death. All respiring cells are potentially susceptible to the toxic effects of elevated P02. However, the major toxic manifestations are related to damage to lungs.
Therf ore anesthesiologist should be understand the oxygen toxicity for the appropriate use in anesthesia and intensive care. This review will discuss current concepts about oxygen toxicity, as follows.
1) History and mechanism of oxygen toxicity
2) Side effects and complications of oxygen
3) Basis of oxygen tolerance
4) Diagnosis of oxygen toxicity
5) Therapy and prevention of oxygen toxicity
